Hibernating bats, Wierzchowska Cave, January 2019, Poland

Winter time is associated with decrease of available food for many animals. Therefore, some of them go to sleep known as the hibernation. Hibernation is a state of slow metabolic rate and slow heart beat, so the energy is saved and an animal can survive winter. One of the hibernating animals are bats. Yesterday my husband and I visited the Upper Wierzchowska Cave that is located about 15 km northwest of Kraków. We are very grateful and happy that we could admire a hibernating lesser horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus hipposideros).
