A Closer Look into the Intestine: the Crypts & their Friends

What are the crypts?
Crypts are structures, which you can find in the intestine. The function of an intestinal crypt is to maintain epithelial tissue in the intestine. In this process crucial role play stem cells, which are located at the bottom of each crypt. Stem cells are very precious cells - they are in undifferentiated state and give rise to other cells.
Generally speaking, stem cells are very rare in our organism and live in special places, where they are protected. Such places are called the stem cell niches. In my PhD project I am investigating the role of fibroblasts as a stem cell niche for the intestinal stem cells.

About me

I am a cheerful biologist. I studied biology at the Jagiellonian University in Cracow, Poland (graduated in 2009). I expanded my education and lab work experience by doing several internships in molecular biology and cell biology (Utrecht, Cracow, Poznan, Warsaw). After the studies I was employed at the Collegium Medicum Jagiellonian University in Cracow, Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague and Helmholtz Zentrum München. Currently I am a PhD student at the Klinikum rechts der Isar Technische Universität München.
At the moment doing doctorate is absorbing almost my whole time. Something outside of science? Sometimes you might see me running with a camera ;) I also enjoy new cultures and love dancing as well as music of 70´ and 80´.
